With 24 medals, many of the United States’ top athletes, including comeback kid Bode Miller and phenom Shaun White, have surpassed expectations with magnificent, world-class, performances. However, what I’ve found equally as inspiring as Team USA’s performance are the messages of hope and grace that some of our youngest Olympians have demonstrated. Prime example: US Snowboarder and Olympic silver medalist Hannah Teter. Hannah wowed us with her performance in the halfpipe, but even more impressive is the philanthropic work we learned about during the broadcast. Through Hannah’s Gold (http://www.hannahsgold.com/), Teter raises money for clean water projects, homeless AIDS victims, and the town of Kirindon, Kenya. It’s refreshing and exciting to see a young woman of Hannah’s talents using her stature to give back to the environment. A lesson to all of us: that anyone has the ability to make a difference. Even during the economic pinch, a very select group of Americans have continued to donate many of their hard-earned dollars to philanthropic causes, such as global health and education initiatives.  BusinessWeek did a great story on these “Top 50 American Philanthropists.”  You can view the article here:

Warren Buffett tops this year’s list, giving over $40 billion to charity in the last four years.  Bill and Melinda Gates were runner’s up, a mere $38 billion shy of what Buffett gave to his various philanthropies.

Also, here is the link to the slide show of the men and women who made the list.  You can also check out the top 25 below.
