For the upcoming season of the reality show “Celebrity Apprentice,” the characters are all notable and controversial in their own right.  Among those are New York Mets great Darryl Strawberry and former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich.  Strawberry has yet to announce which charity he will be supporting: http://www.silive.com/mets/index.ssf/2010/01/former_mets_star_strawberry_to.html

When all is said and done, baseball is a business.  There are some unenviable tasks that are necessary in order to keep the product, in this case the Detroit Tigers, moving forward.  The  general manager, Dave Dombrowski, stated that trading Curtis Granderson was one of the more difficult moves he has had to make because of Granderson’s contributions off the field.  While he was in Detroit, Granderson established the Grand Kids Foundation to help the education of the children of Detroit. The foundation will probably continue, but will become more difficult with the complications of Granderson now playing in New York.   http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091209&content_id=7790584&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees has recently been awarded the 2009 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year.  It is hard to believe that after all the Yankee greats, Jeter is the first Yankee to win the award.  It would also be difficult for someone to argue for someone to else to be awarded after the accolade-filled year that Jeter has had coupled with the World Series victory.

David Ortiz, aka Big Papi, is holding his 2nd annual charity golf event in the first week in December. Last year’s event raised more than $300,000 for the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, which provides children in New England and the Dominican Republic access to pediatric critical care. http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091117&content_id=7676002&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos
