The Boomer Esiason Foundation

Posted on: November 26, 2008

One former professional athlete knows what it takes to run a successful foundation is Boomer Esiason, NFL quarterback for 14 seasons.  The one-time recipient of the Associated Press’ NFL Most Valuable Player Award, is now 47 years old and is the father of two children.  One of his children, 17-year old Gunner Esiason, was diagnosed with Cystic Fybrosis at age 2.  According to the Boomer Esiason Foundation Website, “Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening disease that causes mucus to build up and clog some of the organs in the body, particularly in the lungs and pancreas.  The severity of cystic fibrosis symptoms is different from person to person.”

When Esiason found out that Gunner had been diagnosed with CF, he was devastated.  It was 1993 and he was on the practice field at New York Jets mini-camp when he got the call.  He immediately flew back home to Cincinnati to be with his son.  The Long Island native was determined to raise money and awareness about the disease that was now in his family.  While still a professional quarterback, Esiason began raising money for cystic fibrosis through sales of his own condiment known as Boomer’s barbecue sauce.  His playing days ended in 1997, but Esiason used his determination, overall appeal, and his business contacts to establish the Boomer Esiason Foundation.  The BEF Foundation has grown enormously over the last 10 years, raising money through golf tournaments and other events, all of which goes towards fighting cystic fybrosis.

Since the time the Boomer Esiason Foundation was created, the average life-expectancy of a patient born with CF has doubled from just 19 years to 38 years.  The BEF has given a lot of money over the years to help fund the research and the new treatments for cystic fybrosis.  As Boomer charasmatically states, “I want my son Gunner to outlive me.”

Please check out this YouTube video of stories of personal connection to the Boomer Esiason Foundation, showing how amazingly warm the people connected to the foundatioin truly are.  Also, check out a link to the foundation’s website, http://www.esiason.org.
