After the team chaplain mentioned it to Mike Sweeney, the reserve first baseman helped round up some teammates for today’s trip.

“As of yesterday we only had two guys, so I went around the clubhouse and spread the word to the guys about what it was all about and within five minutes, there were 11 guys that wanted to go,” Sweeney said. “It just shows, we’re playing a game for a living. The way we play the game might give a lot of joy to a lot of people in our country, maybe even our soldiers. But the true heroes are the ones who defend our country. And we as ballplayers want to give back to them. It should be pretty awesome…”

EAST ROCKHILL – Students at Pennridge High School started off their day Wednesday with a visit by The Flyin’ Hawaiian himself – Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino. And they have classmate Rachael Brennan to thank for the treat.

Brennan, a 10th-grader, won a recent ‘Take Shane to School’ contest sponsored by AT&T, as part of a campaign to educate teens about the dangers of texting and driving at the same time. Victorino spoke to an assembly of students after arriving with Brennan at the start of the school day.

The prize included a limousine ride to school with Victorino as well as tickets to a Phillies game.

Four year total rises to more than $900,000 to support charities that help women

“In its fourth year the Scotiabank Women’s Charity Challenge raised $200,000 in support of various women’s charities across Canada. Golf elite, Annika Sorenstam and Natalie Gulbis teamed up to host the event at the Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ontario.
