“PHILADELPHIA — Regardless of any possible celebrating for Monday night, the Phillies had already made plans for how they’re spending their morning in Washington today. They are visiting the Walter Reed Hospital, where active and retired military are treated.
After the team chaplain mentioned it to Mike Sweeney, the reserve first baseman helped round up some teammates for today’s trip.
“As of yesterday we only had two guys, so I went around the clubhouse and spread the word to the guys about what it was all about and within five minutes, there were 11 guys that wanted to go,” Sweeney said. “It just shows, we’re playing a game for a living. The way we play the game might give a lot of joy to a lot of people in our country, maybe even our soldiers. But the true heroes are the ones who defend our country. And we as ballplayers want to give back to them. It should be pretty awesome…”
